The History of Knitting in Cornwall
Cornwall used to have a thriving knitting industry with each fishing port or even families having their own unique pattern for their ‘Cornish Gansey Jumpers’. The Industry was lead by Cornish fisher wives. Like the Guernseys from the Channel Islands the Cornish ‘Gansey’ incorporated the pattern on both the back and front of the garment, meaning that if your elbows wore through you simply turned the jumper around. Times were tough and garments needed to have as long a life as possible. Another reason for individual patterns was sadly the need for identification when fisherman were lost at sea, your home port would be recognised from the pattern.
All Guernsey’s come with a complimentary leaflet printed on premium paper detailing their history which makes a great addition to your jumper if you are buying it as a gift and will give the recipient of the ‘Cornish Gansey jumper ‘ the information on its history.
